YIMBYs of NoVA celebrates the election results of the 2024 Democratic Primaries in Arlington and Alexandria. 

In the race for Arlington County Board, voters selected our #1 endorsed candidates, Julius D. "JD" Spain Sr. Spain led the field of first-place votes, and after the subsequent tabulation of through the Rank Choice Voting, Spain emerged as the winner with 55% of the vote thanks to 2nd place votes from our other endorsed candidate, Tenley Peterson. Spain has been a firm supporter of abundant, affordable housing and was a leading advocate for Missing Middle housing.

Alexandrians sent a clear message that they support the city’s current direction, including “controversial” zoning reforms to legalize more housing. YIMBY-endorsed Alyia Gaskins rode to an overwhelming victory as the city’s next mayor. Victorious YIMBY-endorsed candidates for City Council included Sarah Bagley, Kirk McPike, and Canek Aguirre. Multiple candidates ran against Zoning for Housing; none were elected.

We look forward to working with all of tonight’s winners to make Northern Virginia a more welcoming, affordable, and accessible region to all. We thank all of the pro-housing candidates who ran for local office.
